How to Become a Notary in New York

Exam results take ~10 days by mail. Application processing takes just 3-5 business days online.

  1. Check Eligibility

    Be 18 or older, a NY resident or have a NY business address, and have no disqualifying felony conviction.

  2. Study

  3. Take the Exam

    Walk in at a DOS exam center (New York City exams must be scheduled by email), pay the $15 fee, and complete 40 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour. Score 70% to pass.

  4. Apply

    Submit your application at businessexpress.ny.gov with your pass slip information, a sworn Oath of Office (DOS-2201) and the $60 application fee.

  5. Get Commissioned

    The Secretary of State issues your 4-year commission and mails your New York Notary Public Identification Card.

The NY notary exam has 40 multiple choice questions. You have 1 hour to complete them. The exam covers three topics: License Law, General Terms, and Duties and Functions.
You need to score 70% or higher to pass the NY notary exam. That means you must answer at least 28 out of 40 questions correctly.
The total minimum cost is $75: a $15 exam fee plus a $60 application fee. Optional costs include a notary stamp ($15-$40).
